My hero
I have studied with greats and been mentored by the top surgeons in the world. I honor and and admire the great heroes of surgery but there is one person that I admire most: This is
Dr. Hafid Milan, an oral surgeon from the Philippines. Unknown doctor to most of us but he made a tremendous impact on my life and the way I view our contribution as dentists.
This was Step #1
When Dr. Milan approached me, my first reaction was to buy the patient a ticket to the US and treat him in my practice at no charge (this patient comes from a very unpriviledged background and wouldnt be able to afford it). A visa problem didn't allow this to happen and Dr. Milan and his team stepped up to the plate.
The "dental elephant man" has hope and will be helped!
The Checklist:
Here's what we did next:
- Full medical evaluation and clearance for surgery.
- CT scan and a panorex (conventional radiographs were not possible).
- One-On-One Skype conference between Dr. Milan (Philippines) and Dr. Simon (Beverly hills)
- Eatablish a surgical & restorative plan
Very Very Challenging because...
Since it's such a rare condition, there are not too many established guidelines on how to treat it best. One thing was clear:
The excess tissue needs to be removed so this patient can be embraced back into society. His dental condition needs to be addressed ASAP regaining his function and restoring his dignity.
A massive goal with potential MASSIVE IMPACT.
There were many decayed teeth and several hopeless ones. He couldn't have dental care because of that.
It needed to be done in 2 steps:
1. Surgical excision
2. Extractions and restorative treatment.
The BIGGEST CHALLENGE:
Gingival fibromatosis is a genetic condition. The gingiva can and will probably grow again...
What is the best option? How was this patient helped?
