"How To Perform Surgery In Esthetic Zone and Come On Top! "

It happens so many times when I lecture, coach or just have lunch with a colleague. I am being asked how I deal with surgery in the esthetic zone? If I have any concerns or fears?

What If the surgery does not work out and the esthetics is poor? and the patient gets upset? and... and...

Great question(s)!

Let me show you what are the things that help me prepare, stay calm and deliver good esthetic treatment.

I am just a normal guy. I have my own concerns and also have patients with very high esthetic demands.

That is the area I practice in.

I am sure you also have picky patients. Patients deserve to picky. If you needed an upper central incisor replaced...

You would be just as picky as your patients!

And that's actually one of the first requirements for being successful in esthetic surgery. You have to “picky” yourself. You have to have high esthetic standards.

You would want your own smile to be perfect, wouldn’t you?

And you would choose a doctor with high demands.
I am trying to tell you that you need to become the doctor you would like to be treated by.

Interesting concept?
It was for me when I discovered this.

Imagine you need an esthetic procedure yourself.

Give it a try.
Think about the exact treatment that you think is needed.

Think about the different steps, the sequence, use of other specialists... ...without any compromise.

Think about some of the risks and what would be the side effects if “plan A “does not work.

The reason it's important is because

You will have the ideal treatment plan!

I hope it makes sense to you.

Any treatment that is good enough for you as a dentist should be great for your “picky” patient.

So we established this concept so far.

Next:

Your patient has short teeth and a “gummy” smile. You would want to remove the excessive gingivae, improve teeth proportions and reduce the gingival display.

Now, you will probably have some more concerns/fears/insecurities like:

“I don’t really know the diagnosis...”
“I don’t know the steps of the surgery...”
“I’m concerned about removing too much gingiva...”

“I don’t know how to deal with complications...”

Ok. The more questions you ask about what you don’t know the better it is for you.

“I don’t know” are the 3 most important words in the English language (technically 4 but who’s counting...)

Now, your mind will start asking you specific questions that are right- on!

These are the very important questions that you need to ask and debate when you’re about to treat an esthetic case (or any case for that matter).

So you imagined you are the patient needing an esthetic procedure.

You asked all the important questions and admitted that you don’t know enough

Here is the next step:

Now YOU Need To Prepare!

The time is NOW because your patients are counting on you.

They trust you to deliver a great esthetic outcome.

And you would like to help them.
If you didn’t, you probably wouldn’t even be interested in an article about “Performing Surgery in the Esthetic Zone”, right?
So now let me show you how to prepare for your esthetic surgery. This is how it goes:

Here are 5 Tips To Prepare For Esthetic Surgery So You Can Come On Top

1. Anatomy

Your patient trusts you to perform surgery. It’s a privilege and big responsibility.

Did you ever feel that you are not 100% sure about the anatomy you are working on? The nerves? Blood vessels? Bony undercuts?

You have to be on top of that and know the “Surgical Red Zones”.
I’m not talking about re-learning the anatomy book and memorizing everything like you did in dental and medical school.

Know the RELEVANT SURGICAL ANATOMY so you can operate in confidence, avoid damaging sensitive tissues, know to handle complications, get a great surgical result and justify your patient’s trust!

2. Be very clear on the results you want with your patient and with yourself.

For example, if your patient is concerned with a “gummy” smile. Have a good idea about the ideal gingival level and how to get there. The experience that you want is a smooth procedure where you know every step and the sequence. You would want to be calm during the surgery, the surgical bone and tissue manipulation go well, and your patient will have a great experience and result.

At the end of the process, you feel satisfaction when you see the gingival level where you planned it and your patient is smiling
at you with minimized “gummy” display and beautiful teeth proportions.

Do you think your patient will refer family and friends? You bet!

3. Simulate & Discuss
Today there are simple and inexpensive ways to simulate procedures and even results.

This is a very important step.

Going back to our esthetic crown lengthening example. You could take photos of the patient’s smile and use digital simulation to move the gingival line and change teeth proportions.

You will be doing a virtual crown lengthening procedure. If it sounds costly and complicated to you. It’s not!

I demonstrated it in multiple videos and you will understand this immediately (your investment in this technology would be around $100).

Once you have the “simulated result”, share it and discuss it with your patient.

You see, you spend some extra time on the simulation, maybe even an extra consultation appointment that involves good patient communication.

You will take these extra steps so you can build mutual trust and great doctor-patient relationship.

This is a win-win situation because at the same time, you are preparing yourself for the crown lengthening procedure.
By literally preparing yourself for the procedure, you are establishing yourself as an expert and also very knowledgeable so you can increase case acceptance for a procedure that will run very smoothly with very little problems and complications.

It’s as simple and predictable as well.

There are only upsides to simulating and discussing the process.

4. Believe in yourself, confident doctor!

You might be wondering how you’re going to survive the procedure that could be technical, manage complications and even have the confidence to operate in the esthetic zone.

You may also wonder if you could ever deal with “picky” patients and make them happy.

I know exactly how you feel.
In fact, I felt the same way when I was just getting started!

And I went through a learning curve over several years when I was getting started in this industry.

It was probably worse than what people would realize!

But I found a methodology that allowed me to address these challenges very seriously and more importantly to overcome them!

I was able to refine my knowledge, determine the necessary steps and treatment sequence to first of all execute a good and accurate procedure. I was also able to do this while building patient trust and have great case acceptance.

In fact, the whole process became very smooth and predictable and it didn’t feel like working...it is actually a lot of fun!”

5. Get well trained!
Learning to perform surgery in the esthetic zone is skill that can

be learned and perfected.

Because of the sometimes the specific requirements needed for a good esthetic outcome, you will have to familiarize yourself with several things. Learn from someone who does it all the time and can teach you in a very clear way.
